Experiments, Mr Stink and a zoo trip

A kids day…

We started the day with cuddles, a chat and some breakfast. The kids decided they wanted to play at the park, get kombucha and go to scienceworks. Alex also planned when he’d do his session. So we met friends at the park – first time we’d met these friends outside of groups. They live locally which is a bonus and were quite drawn to each other when they met. The kids had fun playing, riding, chatting and wrestling. Alex got flat tyres though so he kept trying to hijack Daniel’s scooter for the ride home. We had some lunch and the kids hit their iPad – plans then changed as they had no desire to go out again. Except we needed a few bits so we popped to Aldi and the kids wanted the easter eggs to paint and so they did that as soon as we got home. Daniel asked to do some more experiments, so we did. Alex did his session, and showed me some awesome lego inventions.

Home

Alex and I started playing minecraft, making our houses. He’s been doing his sessions too as we’ve been fixing bits around the garden.

Daniel and I read a really lovely book called ‘the bear and the piano’, Alex came to join us.

I’ve added a few apps to the kids’ iPads and whilst they were initially well received, they didn’t go the distance.

We did a coke and mentos experiment, and tried elephant toothpaste. It wasn’t as great as we had hoped. I think the yeast was a little under active.

Out and about

We met a friend at the cinema to watch Peppa pig. Daniel enjoyed it, Alex said the in between bits with ‘Daisy’ were annoying. I agree! I was so glad I only had to pay for 2 of us! Afterwards we went to a park with our friend. The kids had a good play, climbing and obstacle course creating mostly.

We went to the city on the train to watch ‘mr Stink’ at the Arts Centre. Daniel didn’t much like it so we made an early exit leaving Alex behind and waited for him in the foyer. Alex said he really liked it. We did our standard group thing and bought lord of the fries for lunch and headed to Birrarung Marr. As always they spent more time climbing rocks and rolling down the hill than in the playground.

We decided to go to the zoo where it was very quiet. The kids agreed that they wanted to go to the butterfly house. Alex knows the way to most exhibits. We went past the otters and they were very interesting so we watched them for ages breaking up branches, taking them into a tunnel, going for swims and playing. The butterflies were great as always. Alex always wants to hold them or have them land on him and one did. We saw this really cool plant that was growing in a spiral. We checked out the revamped nursery with caterpillars and chrysalis’. Alex explained the lifecycle  to me and we spotted and matched caterpillars to chrysalis’ to butterfly.

Outside the kids watched a short film about the Lord Howe Island stick insect which Alex had lots of questions about afterwards.

We checked out the elephants, went into the education centre, watched the orang-utans, where Daniel wanted to identify them all. Alex like the ball maze challenge! He goes straight to it every time! We went to the seals and read about each of them, saw the penguins swimming too. We headed to the meerkat play area and went into the other education centre nearby. There was a beautiful creeper plant that we liked the flowers of, and discovered it was a passionfruit plant. We were too late for keeper kids, so instead took the hippo trail to end the day.

Activities

Alex went to try wrestling and he loved it! He enjoyed the games and learning some moves and definitely wants to return. He and Daniel wanted to wrestle with Vio that night!

Alex had football training with Vio.
