Unschooling

A short week – we swam, we CK’d, and we went to the Airshow! FINALLY!

Home

Alex woke up from a nightmare so we went to bed together. Then Daniel woke, so we all slept in late together! I love that we are able to do this most days. Rarely are our plans so concrete that we can’t make adjustments or just be late. This is something that I strayed from in term 4 of last year by joining lots of events. Too many!

Alex asked for a motorbike game on his iPad. I got one for him and he spent a little time with it racing and doing tricks. We also watched Moana. Alex loved it, I did too! He asked a few questions about it, and found himself a stick like Maui’s fish hook.

Vio and the kids have wars with toys. They set up bases and adapted the bullets with tape. Alex says it makes them faster!

Vio and Alex went to Bendigo for a football game whilst Daniel and I stayed home. Daniel watched lots of Blaze! We played match and snap, cleaned our car, had a bath with some cool new bath foam I picked up at Aldi. He went a bit crazy with it and it wasn’t as mouldable as i’d hoped but he didn’t care. Afterwards we read some books together.

We visited Vio’s parents and had lunch with them. They gave the kids some money, so afterwards we went to the shops. Alex bought nerf guns as he’s been watching a youtube channel with a family that plays nerf wars, and Daniel got some sand pit toys. We got home and spent the afternoon cleaning up the garden – mowing the lawn, weeding, sweeping, caring for animals, and taking the net off of trampoline. Vio and Alex had a nerf gun war, the kids ran through the sprinklers, and then we watched a movie.

Out and About

At Currawong Kids this week Daniel was much more independent – he walked by himself most of the time, for which my body was very grateful! He sat with Mel for a sit-spot. I was a little worried he’d not be quiet but Mel reported to me later that he was a delight! When the group was singing, he joined in and then asked if he could sing his own song. he sand ‘baa baa black sheep’ in front of everyone! We all played in the creek, the kids threw rocks, fished out bricks and found sea glass. We walked up to the billabong to spot the turtles but no luck. Alex and I found a huge spider web. We did an activity that involved being blindfolded and guided to a tree where we would use all of our other senses to experience the tree. We were then led away and disoriented, removed blindfolds and then needed to find the tree again. It was amazing how our other senses strengthened without vision. I was really aware of where I was in space. Alex had a turn but could see through the blindfold so there was only limited success! We walked back the long way, forming new geographical connections in our mind. On the way home i stopped at the playground. the kids had been asking me to for weeks but I always had a reason not to… It was nice to say yes! The kids helped each other climb and the sand pit toys prompted Daniel to add them to his wish list.

I took the kids out for haircuts before we headed to the Airshow. As we parked there was a very noisy display. Alex said the plane was ripping through the air like it was paper. The kids enjoyed going into the larger transport planes, but they wanted to go in more – especially a fighter! They did get to look in cockpits and speak to pilots and soldiers though. They scored a few freebies too! Alex’s favourite flying display was the F22 raptor. It was amazing! I got to see the F35 in the flesh which was pretty cool, though only a ground display. Alex really liked the WW2 reenactment and was excited to be given some blank bullet casings as souvenirs. Daniel found the day a little tiring and was not as interested and it came out in a few tantrums. On one occasion one of the staff gave us a ride on the buggy to a room where the kids could make paper aeroplanes. She found out Alex was homeschooling and decided for him that we must be learning about planes and this was our excursion. She then told Alex that she’d worked at 8 airshows, and said that they are 2 years apart. She asked him how many years she’d worked there! I was considering how to reply as I didn’t like her testing him, but Alex replied instead with ’16’. He didn’t seem bothered by the question fortunately. We watched the twilight air displays and fireworks from the carpark before heading home.

Socialising

Our HS weekly meet was at the local (to me) outdoor pool as it was another hot day. The kids however complained that the water was cold, so we headed inside. There were just a few of us this week, but the kids had fun. Alex spent most of the time with the new boy we’d recently met. He was a little sensitive to Alex’s ways but they got by okay. Then a friend from last year arrived and they were happy to see each other. they all played volleyball, swam and chased each other.

The neighbours came over and played on the trampoline. Unfortunately they were wrestling and one of them got hurt, we thought he’d broken his arm! Fortunately after a Dr’s trip it wasn’t quite so bad, but he needed a bandage.

Activities
Alex had the last of his event days at athletics. He got 2 PBS (in 400m and shot put). He was so close to one in discus too! He’d had high hoped for the day in an attempt to earn a gold PB medal. He fell short by 3 in the end. So that was 18 PBs for the season. Alex enjoys the in-between events time the most I think as he doesn’t stop running around and playing football with friends. Daniel was playing mums and dads with his friends too. He also did the U5 race.
