Unschooling WWGUT (What We Got Up To)

December – a speedy review plus WWGUT pics

Home

  • Beyblades! Kids into them heaps, especially Alex. He watched over Daniel and Jacob very fairly and responsibly.
  • Made some Christmas decorations – paper chains. Also made parkour course in lounge! Daniel hurt himself and it was interesting watching Alex nurse him (can you move your legs? wiggle your toes). they concluded that Daniel can’t do the same as Alex, so they built in an intermediate step. Kids made Christmas cards and Alex actually wanted to write in his! He asked me to write for him to copy. Made a christmas wreath out of our hand prints.
  • Snap circuits – the kids experimented with adding pieces to see how it affected the speed of the fan.
  • Received Harry potter pjs from my mum! Kids pretty happy.
  • Watched Ponyo. Alex didn’t stick with it but Daniel seemed to like it. He made observations like ‘the tide is in’ and was more aware of the details than noticed myself.
  • Slip n slide and pool play
  • Kids made a StikBot movie with the neighbours over.

Alex

  • Playing minecraft on PC. He got really upset when he was killed and lost everything. now he plays with cheats activated and ‘keep inventory’ toggle on ALWAYS. Trying new commands on star wars mod.
  • Playing lots of Rocket League
  • Perfecting beyblade launches and moves
  • Curious about the size of numbers – how many zeroes is that, how many thousands is that
  • Saw shadow pattern in laundry from netting and he explained all about how to me
  • Playing lego – ninjago, trains and bridges. Watching ninjago lots too.
  • Fidget spinner experiment as seen on YouTube with a pen. He managed to balance it!
  • Moved on to HP5. it got a bit dark for him, so we turned it off.
  • He asked me if you can stop yourself from having babies, or if you have to have them! I was honest and said of course that you don’t have to have them. not everybody wants to! Funnily enough on another day he was watching a video on gross things found in food and asked me what a durex was. I told him that it was work on a man’s penis to stop sperm from meeting an egg. he was horrified at the thought of it being in food and said “I hope it wasn’t used”.
  • Chatted about what to do when he feels overwhelmed. He said he’d like cuddles and a back rub. he finds having people around a lot quite overwhelming.

Daniel

  • Lots of play with playdough, planks/brackitz creations. mag tiles sorting
  • Games – Seed for the birds, Blokus, Trouble – he recognises the numbers on the dice without counting them (subitising).
  • Puzzles
  • Loves smashing ice outside! Loves using the tools again too. to hammer in nails.
  • Been playing Slugterra and getting so excited when he wins a game and gets past a boss to gain a new slug! He gets very mad when he loses though but is learning to keep trying.
  • Daniel and I play Cooking Fever together. We’ve also enjoyed making biscuits from his new cook book!

Out and About

  • Flip Out. Alex loves to go and practise his flips. He did a front flip twist today, but couldn’t do back flips several times in a row and got very frustrated. He took some time to calm and then got it right. He said to me “when I’m calm, I can do it”.
  • Burger festival – enjoyed by all but left wanting more!
  • Brimbank park with scooters, though very busy. So we headed to the hill and kids zoomed down it. Alex asked to measure his speed, but we couldn’t so he asked to time him instead. Then we worked out how far with Vio’s paces and estimated a speed. Kids parkoured across the rocks at the river.
  • Hair cuts! both kids wanted, but from different places. Alex looked through a catalogue at barbers and wanted a design, but they couldn’t do. Afterwards he said to me “why did they even have those pics I looked at if they can’t do them!?”
  • Went to Funtopia and Alex tried to win Xbox lol. Spent time race-climbing. Daniel played in Playworld and afterwards we had milkshakes, but D was not in a good mood!
  • Vio took Alex and his friend Savo to watch a football game.
  • Spent NYE at footscray Park with Micki and cousins. Was a nice night, best display of fireworks yet.

Socialising

  • Play with cousins. beyblades are popular, but Emily feeling left out so i play games with her.
  • Visited a friend in her new house. Daniel was told by friend (less than 1 year senior) that she couldn’t understand him as he sounded like a baby. I felt sad for him but he responded “I’m not a baby, I said….”
  • Neighbours over and playing with kids outside. Kids then watching a video called ‘narwhals’ which was funny
  • Attended a BBQ with vio’s football team that he coaches at fairbairn park. Alex took boomerangs and showed other kids how to throw them, then with some kids that liked to climb.
  • Last HS meet of the year at Flip out. The foam pits were being cleaned out so the kids helped, but then got stuck when they jumped in!
  • Some coaching at a park play needed by Alex one day as he was very braggy (new kids around). Other friends asked us to join them at the open gym class, so we did.
  • Visited Saltwater Croc water park with friends

Activities

  • VFS training every Saturday.
  • Football trials for Alex. he did really well.
  • Parkour class – Alex enjoyed, Daniel losing interest.
  • Futsal games each week. Alex made a penalty save. The other kids are being hard on him generally and he’s getting frustrated at their not including him. He’s not the best GK, but loves to try. One game no-one else wanted to be goalie but Alex volunteered. I tried to put him off, which I regret now because he so wisely answered my “Do you think you can do it well” with “I’ll try my best”. He made a few good saves and they won the game!
  • Little ninjas for them both, and enjoying although always an injury!
  • Young engineers lego – had a run in with the teacher who said he had already had a lolly in his sleigh and he got upset at the injustice. It was fixed though.

Craig’s visit

We picked up my brother from airport on 18th December. oin his first nght he babysat kids whilst Vio and I went to see Muse! The kids stayed up very late, but eventually fell asleep on the couch. Alex was a little put out by it all and called me to find out when I’d be home and if I’d had snacks without him! lol.

Alex, Craig and Vio went to see the Star Wars movie. I played monopoly junior with Daniel for first time.

Visited Healesville sanctuary. Watched Birds of Flight show, fed parrots, then learnt that Craig doesn’t like birds lol. Buried each other in sand pit, visited new kangaroo area. Was a good day.

Went to city but the kids not keen on queues so we avoided Myer and SantaLand. Took pics ArtVo style in crown. Craig bought kids nerf guns for Christmas and we showed him around ACMI. Alex befriended another kid, again, on the consoles.

Alex playing beyblades so much and discusses the science behind it (though he is unaware of ‘learning science’).

Had family over on Christmas Eve – lots of food, games – doggy, doggy, who’s got the bone?! Alex said it was the best Christmas ever. We took skateboards to Brimbank on Christmas Day and Alex quickly got the hang of it, but freaked out about the pads. We also took his drone for a few flights.

Daniel sits with craig every night and they play. Often on iPad, but also new games. I’m surprised at how quickly he picks them up!

Headed to barwon beach where Alex snorkelled, we rockpooled, and Daniel dug holes with Craig We got the boogie board out too.

Craig took us out for burgers on his last day with us, and we went to Williamstown for ice-cream and a wander.
